Join us for ESL Book Discussion at the Main Library! Practice English through reading "The Day the World Came to Town" by Jim DeFede. This is designed for intermediate adult English learners.

This inspiring true story shares how the small town of Gander welcomed thousands of stranded airline passengers after the September 11 attacks. The book offers meaningful opportunities to build vocabulary, explore cultural and historical context, and practice speaking in a supportive group setting.

Format: Hybrid (in person at the Main Library or online via Zoom) Registration required. Zoom link will be emailed to all registrants.

Program Schedule: 

  • May: Introduction to the book, author, and historical background-  Books are provided — pick up your copy in the Adult Nonfiction Department during the first month.
  • June: Discussion of Chapters 1–6
  • July: Discussion of Chapters 7–13
  • August: Discussion of Chapters 14–19
